Hyperliquid vs Sour

Hyperliquid and Sour are not on the same chain. Hyperliquid runs on its own L1 (HyperCore plus HyperEVM) with a native sub-second CLOB tuned for HFT-style perp trading. Sour is a Solana-native perp DEX with 1.8-second batch clearing and uniform clearing prices. The matching philosophy is opposite — and for a Solana-USDC-ecosystem user, Hyperliquid is not the same opportunity set.

Hyperliquid figures reflect the broad characterization of the product. Sour figures reflect the v1.0.7 mainnet protocol.

What Hyperliquid is good at

Hyperliquid is the largest perp DEX globally by cumulative volume — roughly $4.39T cleared. That number reflects a real, sustained, professionally-traded venue. Liquidity is deep, makers compete aggressively, and the CLOB is tuned for sub-second matching the way a top-tier CEX is. If your trading style is HFT-adjacent — sub-second quote updates, narrow spreads, deep books on majors — Hyperliquid is built for you and Sour is not.

Hyperliquid is also audited, which is something Sour cannot claim yet. And HYPE is live, with a real token economy that some users prefer for the alignment between trading activity, fee rebates, and protocol ownership.

The continuous-time funding model and the 14-day rolling volume tier ladder give high-volume traders compounding rebates that flat-fee Sour does not match. For a desk trading large notionals, the per-bp difference dominates.

And as its own L1, Hyperliquid does not share a block schedule with anything else. There is no neighboring program contention for compute units or write locks; the chain exists for the orderbook.

What Sour does that Hyperliquid does not

These are structural and ecosystem differences. The first one is dispositive for many Solana users.

  • SOLANA-NATIVE
Sour lives on Solana mainnet at program ID souryQgnM1xiNuGcmVYLPGT3MKqnGN8QTqP8zk8eape. Your USDC, your wallet, your routing, your DeFi composability — all stays in the Solana ecosystem. Hyperliquid requires bridging to its own L1, which is its own trust and operational surface.
  • BATCH CLEARING IS MEV-RESISTANT BY CONSTRUCTION
Sour fills every order in a 1.8s batch at one uniform clearing price, settled atomically. Sub-millisecond CLOBs like Hyperliquid still match orders sequentially — they just do it fast. Sequential matching means inclusion-order edges exist, and HFT firms exist to exploit them. Sour removes the surface, not the speed advantage of the searcher. See /learn/mev-resistant-by-design.
  • FUNDING INSIDE SETTLEMENT
Funding is computed inside every Sour batch as part of the settlement step. Hyperliquid has continuous-time funding paid per block, which is closer in spirit. But Sour's funding is part of the same atomic settlement that prices the batch — there is no separate funding schedule at all. See /learn/no-funding-cron-perps.
  • SETTLEMENT MATH IS FORMALLY VERIFIED
18 Kani bounded model checks plus a Lean specification plus 15 property tests. Reproducible artifacts at github.com/GageBachik/sour-verification. Hyperliquid is audited, which is a different claim than mechanically verified. See /learn/formally-verified-perp-dex.
  • FLAT 3 BPS, NO TIER LADDER
Sour charges 3 bps per fill regardless of size, history, or staking. Hyperliquid uses a 14-day rolling volume tier ladder with maker/taker split — better for top-decile makers, worse for everyone else. Sour's flat fee is honest: a first-day trader and a top-decile maker pay the same bps. See /learn/flat-fee-perp-dex.
  • OPEN SOURCE
The Sour program is open source. Hyperliquid's matching engine has historically been closed source. For users who weight verifiability over performance, that is a different trust posture.

When to pick Hyperliquid

Pick Hyperliquid if you are running a high-volume, HFT-adjacent trading style and the per-bp cost dominates everything else. The maker/taker split plus 14-day volume tier ladder pays you back as you scale. Sour does not, and will not — flat-fee is the design.

Pick Hyperliquid if you need sub-second matching for time-sensitive flow. A 1.8-second batch slot is fundamentally not the same as a sub-second CLOB; if your strategy lives or dies on intra-slot fills, Hyperliquid is the venue and Sour is not.

Pick Hyperliquid if your capital is already on its L1 and the cost of bridging back to Solana is not worth the matching-model difference.

Pick Hyperliquid if HYPE token alignment matters to your strategy. Sour has no token, no presale, no airdrop. Anyone DMing about a Sour presale is not us.

When to pick Sour

Pick Sour if you want to stay on Solana. That is the simplest reason. Your USDC, your wallet, your DeFi composability, your tax accounting, your routing — all of it stays in the Solana ecosystem. No bridge, no separate L1, no separate operational surface.

Pick Sour if MEV exposure on every fill is something you actually pay attention to. Sub-second CLOBs match sequentially; batch clearing does not. The surface is structurally different.

Pick Sour if mechanical verification of settlement math matters more than the marketing word "audited." 18 Kani proofs and a Lean spec at github.com/GageBachik/sour-verification check the aggregate-budget invariant on every PR.

Pick Sour if flat-fee math without a volume tier ladder is what your strategy needs to make sense. Honest backtests, no rebate ladder to assume into.

Pick Sour if you are new to perps. Degen Mode caps your max loss at the bet size; the first time a position blows up, the math is the math you signed up for. Pro Mode is on the same orderbook for when you graduate.

Hyperliquid is the global CLOB winner. Sour is the Solana-native, formally verified, batch-cleared alternative — different chain, different matching philosophy, different trade-offs.
